NBA: Denver 97, Houston 92

Houston -- J.R. Smith scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half Wednesday and helped rally the Denver Nuggets to their eighth straight victory -- 97-92 over Houston.

The Nuggets trailed by 15 after one period and were still behind by two going into the fourth quarter. A 10-point run during the closing period, however, put Denver in charge and the Nuggets picked up a win that kept them four games in front in the Northwest Division.

Denver has won its last two games without Carmelo Anthony, who has a sprained left ankle.

Chauncey Billups contributed 21 for the Nuggets and Kenyon Martin had 12.

Denver's most recent loss came Jan. 9 against Sacramento.

Houston lost its third in a row, equaling its longest losing streak of the season. Aaron Brooks scored 22 to lead the Rockets, who made only 7-of-22 from the field in the fourth period.
