Bode Miller to take shot at tennis

White Plains -- American skier Bode Miller said he will try to qualify to play in the U.S. Open tennis tournament this year.

Miller said he will enter the USTA's new nationals playoff system to earn to a spot in tennis's fourth major tournament of the year. The effort is to begin with a sectional tournament in the spring after the World Cup skiing season ends.

Miller, 32, won the Maine high school state singles tennis championship in 1996 and his family operates a tennis camp in New Hampshire.

He has two overall World Cup titles and two Olympic silver medals in skiing.

The USTA this year instituted a program in which U.S. players can earn a wild-card berth at the U.S. Open by winning the playoff tournament. One tournament slot will be given to the men's and women's playoff winners.
