Fatwa: No Koranic verses for ringtones

Cairo -- Muslims should not use verses from the Koran or the daily calls to prayer as ringtones for their cellphones, the Grand Mufti of Egypt said in a fatwa.

Ali Gomaa said religious poetry or songs can be used by those who want to honor their religion on their cellphones but not the Koran, The al-Arabiya news network reported. The broadcaster said it has a copy of the fatwa.

"The Koran came from God so that we can worship Him and it should be read or listened to with reverence," Gomaa said in his fatwa. "Picking up the phone is sure to interrupt the verse and this is disrespectful to the holy book."

Gomaa said using the call for prayer is also disrespectful. He added it might confuse those within earshot who hear a ringing phone and believe it is time for prayer.
