NHL: Edmonton 3, Toronto 1

Edmonton, Alberta -- Jeff Deslauriers took a shutout deep into the third period Wednesday and turned aside 26 shots in bringing Edmonton a 3-1 victory over Toronto.

Edmonton had dropped seven in a row and Deslauriers had lost six consecutive starts but Patrick O'Sullivan delivered two power-play goals to cool off the Maple Leafs.

Toronto won just one of its first 13 games but went into Wednesday's contests a mere three points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Gilbert Brule gave the Oilers momentum by scoring with 53 seconds left in the first period. O'Sullivan then came through on the power play in both the second and third periods, scoring each time on his backhand.

Deslauriers had his shutout bid wiped out when Phil Kessel scored an unassisted power-play goal with 4 minutes remaining.

Vesa Toskala stopped 20 of 23 shots for the Maple Leafs.
