Right knee injury end Jacobs' season

New York -- New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his injured right knee and will miss the season-ending game at Minnesota.

New York -- New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his injured right knee and will miss the season-ending game at Minnesota.

Team officials, including Coach Tom Coughlin, made the decision Wednesday because the 6-foot-4, 264-pound Jacobs had been plagued by knee pain for much of the 2009 season and his presence against the Vikings will not be needed.

The Giants were eliminated from the NFC playoff picture by last Sunday's 41-9 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

"I think Brandon's always had some issues that he's had to deal with," Coughlin told reporters. "He wouldn't use it as an excuse and I won't either."

Jacobs ends the season with 224 carries for 835 yards.

He scored six touchdowns -- one receiving and five rushing -- and his touchdown catch covered 74 yards in a 31-24 loss on Dec. 6 to the Dallas Cowboys.
