Bomb squad finds teddy bear

Albany -- Oregon State Police said a suspicious object spotted by an employee at their Albany offices turned out to be a teddy bear in a plastic bag.

Officials said a state police employee spotted the object outside the doors of the offices as she was opening the building at 8 a.m. Monday and her supervisor called in a bomb squad from Salem, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Wednesday.

"Two technicians arrived there but one made the approach," police spokesman Lt. Gregg Hastings said.

Hastings said the technician used an X-ray machine to photograph and examine the package's contents.

"He was able to confirm there wasn't anything inside it except for general stuffing," Hastings said.

"Everyone sort of laughed and had a sigh of relief and so now we're using it for what it's intended to be used for," Hastings said, explaining the bear was donated to the police to use for comforting children after traumatic incidents.
