Disgraced mayor Daoud headed to big screen

Miami Beach, Fla. -- Former Miami Beach Mayor Alex Daoud says he is bringing to the big screen his tale of how he went from leading the Florida city to occupying a prison cell.

The Miami Herald reported Saturday Daoud confirmed his literary memoir,
"Sins of South Beach," is being adapted into a major motion picture by producer Philippe Martinez.

"I feel fantastic," Daoud said Friday after announcing the film plans.

Daoud published his memoir in 2006 and details his time as Miami Beach mayor starting in 1985 until he was removed from office in 1991.

After being removed from office amid corruption allegations, Daoud was convicted of tax evasion, obstructing an investigation and accepting bribes.

The city official, now 66, served an 18-month federal prison sentence, losing his family and home in the process.

The Herald said Martinez, who purchased the film rights to Daoud's book from LionShark Entertainment, offered a hint of his plans.

"We're going to start the movie in jail and treat the movie as a flashback to a certain moment in his life," Martinez said.
