Report: Holliday to become Marshall coach

Charleston, W.Va. -- West Virginia assistant Doc Holliday will be the successor to resigned football Coach Mark Snyder at Marshall University, The Charleston Gazette reported.

Wednesday's report said Holliday, the Mountaineers' director of recruiting/fullbacks and tight ends, was expected to meet with Marshall Athletic Director Mike Hamrick, and, if a deal can be finalized, will sign a contract.

Unnamed sources told the newspaper WVU Coach Bill Stewart and Athletic Director Ed Pastilong have been told and that Holliday has been a silent candidate because of the intrastate rivalry between the schools.

Holliday played on West Virginia's 1975 Peach Bowl team and was a three-year letter winner from 1976-78. He also has worked at Florida and North Carolina State in his 31-year coaching career, and has been on a recruiting trip to Florida this week.

If he gets the job, no details were disclosed on whether he will be involved in the Mountaineers' preparations for the Gator Bowl contest against Florida State on Jan. 1.
