Vanity plate led to robbery arrests

Cardiff, Wales -- Four men jailed for robbery in Wales can thank a vanity plate on one of their cars for leading police to them, authorities say.

Police allege James Snell, 27, was driving his BMW with personalized "J4MES" license plate when he stole a heavy drain cover from a road and the cover was later used by Snell and his accomplices to smash the window of a Cardiff bank they targeted for robbery, The Sun reported Tuesday.

Prosecutors said the men robbed a security guard refilling a cash machine at about midnight.

Snell, his brother Wayne, 34, and Adam Abbot, 38, pleaded guilty to robbery in Cardiff Crown Court. Carl Campion, 44, pleaded not guilty but was convicted of the charge in a separate trial. Snell was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while his brother and Abbot were each sentenced to 8 years and Campion was given 12, the BBC reported.
