Sully's hat sold to benefit schools

Danville, Calif. -- A cap belonging to the airline pilot who landed an Airbus A320 on the Hudson River in New York sold for $5,800 to raise money for three California schools.

US Airways Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, 58, of Danville, Calif., donated and signed the pilot's cap, which drew 68 bids on eBay before the auction ended Monday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday.

The cap was auctioned to benefit Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, the school attended by the pilot's two teenage daughters, as well as Futures Elementary and Community United Elementary schools in Oakland.

"This has been an exciting week. We were thrilled to wake up each day and see how many donations were made across the country to these deserving schools," Sullenberger's wife, Lorrie, said Monday.

Sullenberger rose to national fame Jan. 15, when he safely ditched his US Airways plane on the river after it collided with a flock of birds.
