COL BKB: Texas A&M 74, Akron 62

College Station, Texas -- Donald Sloan helped Texas A&M to a big early lead Friday and the 22nd-ranked Aggies then survived a close game in the second half to defeat Akron 74-62.

Texas A&M won its third straight and climbed to 7-1.

Sloan scored 17 points and Derrick Roland had 15 to go with eight rebounds. Akron (4-3), which had a four-game winning streak snapped, was led by 12 each from Darryl Roberts and Chris McKnight.

The Aggies opened the game on a 13-2 run, but the Zips closed to within three at halftime and still were only six back with 8 minutes remaining. Texas A&M, however, went on a 9-2 run and led by at least 10 the rest of the way.

This was their first basketball meeting in 61 seasons.
