Dearborn -- Union members at two Ford Motor Co. facilities in Illinois said they voted down a contract that would align Ford 's labor costs closer to its U.S. rivals.

Voting continues through the weekend, but the count now includes at least eight Ford facilities that have rejected the offer and four that have approved it, The Detroit News reported Friday.

Near Chicago, United Auto Workers Local 588 voted 430 to 107 to reject the plan that includes wage freezes for new workers.

Local 551 also turned down the contract with 70 percent of rank and file voting no, the News said.

"I've been working here 40 years and 29 times I've been asked to accept concessions and this time I can't do it," said UAW member John Melech at the Ford Rouge Dearborn Truck Plant.

Ford is trying to align costs closer to General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group, which won concessions from labor while in bankruptcy court this summer.

GM and Chrysler have wage freezes in place through 2011 for entry-level workers. The proposed Ford contract includes wage and benefit freezes for new workers and a no-strike clause regarding wage and benefit increases. It also includes a $1,000 bonus for workers if the contract passes.
