Florida down three defensive starters

Gainesville, Fla. -- Second-ranked Florida likely will play its contest at Mississippi State Saturday without three injured defensive starters.

Linebacker Brandon Spikes (groin) and defensive linemen Lawrence Marsh (ankle) and Jaye Howard (knee) all were injured during Saturday's 23-20 win over Arkansas. Team officials did not say whether the three players will fly to Starkville to face the Bulldogs.

The Gators' defense gave up 133 rushing yards, 357 in all, against the Razorbacks, including 107 on just 14 carries by Dennis Johnson, and look to contain one of the country's top running backs, 235-pound Anthony Dixon (116 yards per game) without their best defensive stoppers.

Alabama assumed the No. 1 spot in this week's USA Today Coaches poll after Florida's escape at home in Gainesville.
