Montreal, Oct. 20: Scott Gomez and Brian Gionta scored the only goals in the shootout Tuesday, giving the Montreal Canadiens a 2-1 victory over Atlanta.">
The Canadiens halted a five-game losing streak which had equaled their longest stretch of futility from last year. The skid came after Montreal won its first two games of the season.
Atlanta suffered its second loss, but the Thrashers have picked up at least one point in five of their six games to date.
Gionta scored the game's first goal with 2:16 left in the opening period and Montreal maintained a 1-0 lead until Colby Armstrong tied it up 6:06 into the third.
Jaroslav Halak stopped 22 shots in regulation and overtime before making saves on the only two attempts he faced in the shootout.
Michael Cammalleri failed on Montreal's first shootout effort before Gomez and Gionta put shots past Ondrej Pavelec.
