NHL: Detroit 3, Chicago 2

Detriot, Oct. 8 -- Chris Osgood made 31 saves Thursday in carrying Detroit to its first victory of the season, a 3-2 decision over Chicago in the Red Wings' home opener.

Detroit lost twice to St. Louis last week in a series played in Stockholm, Sweden, and the Red Wings gave up a combined nine goals in those two games.

Osgood was charged with one of the losses, but he was solid against the Blackhawks -- allowing a tip-in goal in the second period and a power-play tally in the third.

Kris Draper, Nicklas Lidstrom and Johan Franzen scored in a span of seven minutes in the second period to give the Red Wings a 3-1 lead.

Chicago split its first two games this year -- played against Florida in Helsinki, Finland.

Thursday's game was a rematch of last season's Western Conference finals, which Detroit won in five games.
