Bobby Bowden safe at Florida State

Tallhassee, Fla. -- The job of long-time Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden is safe for now, school president T.K. Wetherell says.

The Seminoles (2-3) have lost two in a row since a surprising 54-28 win at then-No. 21 Brigham Young on Sept. 19.

A report this week by the Tallahassee Democrat said Jim Smith, the chairman of the board of trustees and a 1962 FSU graduate, wanted the school to make 2009 the last season for the 79-year-old Bowden.

"We ask our coaches and players to play out every play of every game -- and never, never quit," Wetherell said in a statement late Wednesday. "To quit on a team or coaches in midseason is not the Seminole way -- not the 'unconquered' way."

"When the season's over, I'll let them know if I want to come back," Bowden said.

He has been FSU's coach since 1976 and has won two national titles.
