MLB donates 1 million tickets on 9/11

New York, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Major league players and their union have donated 1 million baseball tickets to military personnel, those who serve their communities and disadvantaged youths.

The donations, made Sept. 11, which President Obama has designated a National Day of Service and Remembrance, are part of a program called "MLB & Players Give Back."

"As a social institution, we take the responsibility of giving back to the community seriously, and we believe it is important to thank our veterans and public servants," Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement.

The tickets will go not only to veterans and youths, but also to firefighters and other emergency workers and teachers.

"The players are happy to join Major League Baseball in rewarding the tireless efforts of our community servants," said Michael Weiner, general counsel for the players association.
