17-year-old reaches Open quarterfinals

New York -- Melanie Oudin, a 17-year-old American, beat another seeded Russian Monday to reach the women's U.S. Open quarterfinals.

The 70th-ranked Oudin defeated Nadia Petrova 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. Oudin, from Marietta, Ga., beat fourth-seeded former U.S. Open runner-up Elena Dementieva in the second round and then beat former champion Maria Sharapova in the third round.

Oudin lost the first set in her last three matches before making comebacks.

Monday, she trailed 6-1, 4-3. She converted a third match point in the final game of the third set to complete the upset in 2 hours, 27 minutes.

Petrova committed 27 more unforced errors (59-32) than the young American.

Oudin is the youngest American to reach the quarterfinal in the U.S. Open since Serena Williams turned the trick as a 17-year-old 10 years ago.

Also Monday, 19-year-old Belgian Yanina Wickmayer beat Czech left-hander Petra Kvitova 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
