Serena Williams, the No. 2 seed, needed just 1-hour and 4 minutes to eliminate 22nd-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-0 and move on to the quarterfinals.
The American star, who hit 27 winners and eight aces, is trying for her third Grand Slam title this year and 12th of her career. Her victories included U.S. Open titles in 1999, 2002 and 2008.
Wild card Clijsters, a former world No. 1 who returned to the tour this summer after an absence of more than two years, defeated the third-seeded Venus Williams 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 in a 1-hour, 42-minute match.
Clijsters won the U.S. Open in 2005. Venus won it in 2000 and 2001.
Eighteenth-seeded Li Na of China also advanced, topping Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-2, 6-3.
