eBay plans to sell the division to an investment group that includes Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen's venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
Contributing buyers also include private equity firm Silver Lake Partners and Index Ventures, a British venture capital business. An eBay spokesman, Alan Marks, would not comment on the deal, the Times said.
eBay has considered several approaches to the Internet phone service it bought for $3.1 billion in 2005, outbidding Google and Yahoo!
The online auction Web site discussed a sale of the company with Google last year. It also considered putting Skype into the public arena with an initial public offering.
Skype's founders, Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, have also tried to repurchase their former venture, but have not raised enough capital to meet eBay's price, the Times said.
