Mariners sign top pick Ackley

Seattle -- Three-time All-American Dustin Ackley has signed a five-year contract with the Seattle Marines, who had made him the second pick overall in the draft.

Terms of the deal the 21-year-old University of North Carolina first baseman-outfielder signed Monday were not disclosed.

Ackley, who had Tommy John reconstruction surgery on his right elbow in 2008,
hit .417 as a junior in 2009 with 22 homers and 73 RBI in 66 games.

"When we selected Dustin, we knew he was a special player and a special person," Mariners General Manager Jack Zduriencik said. "We are excited for him to join our organization and can't wait to see him in a Mariners uniform."
