The world's No. 1 player, seeking his 15th major title, and Yang, a 37-year-old South Korean who has one win on the PGA Tour, were at 6-under-par with nine holes to play on a windy afternoon at the Hazeltine National Golf Club.
Woods, who began the day at 8-under with a two-shot lead, let Yang catch up by bogeying the fourth and eighth holes. Yang was even par for the day.
U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover, England's Lee Westwood and and Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark, all playing the back nine, were three strokes behind the leaders.
Three-time major champion Ernie Els was 2-under.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington, who began the round tied with Yang for second place, two behind Woods, was five back after a disastrous quintuple-bogey 8 on the par-3 eighth hole.
Gusty winds blew across the 7,674-yard Hazeltine course, the longest in major championship history.
Woods was trying for his third straight victory, sixth of the season, fifth PGA Championship and 71st win of his career.

I don't care. I used to care about golf but I stopped when golf coverage stopped being golf coverage and became Tiger coverage. The sport is bigger than any player. No one follows that rule anymore it seems.
