Baseball refutes 2003 doping list

New York -- Major League Baseball says eight of the 104 players on a 2003 list of those allegedly having used performance-enhancing drugs should not have been included.

In a statement, the league said it does not possess the list of names and is not able to assess the accuracy of recent media leaks. The league said there are more names on the government list (104) than the maximum number of positives recorded under the 2003 program (96).

"The Mitchell Report made clear some of the 96 positives were contested by the union," the statement said.

"Given the uncertainties inherent in the list, we urge the press and the public to use caution in reaching conclusions based on leaks of names, particularly from sources whose identities are not revealed."

Last week, a New York Times report said David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez, former Red Sox teammates, were on the 2003 list.
