Brazil police rule Gatti's death a suicide

Rio De Janerio -- Police in Rio de Janeiro have ruled the death of boxing great Arturo Gatti a suicide and have released his wife, Amanda Rodrigues, from jail.

Rodrigues was arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after Gatti was found dead July 11, with police initially saying she used the strap of her purse to strangle her husband while he was sleeping at a beach apartment in northeast Brazil.

When Rodrigues was released late Thursday, she was accompanied by her lawyer and sister and authorities said they had concluded their investigation.

"He was a great man and fighter," fellow boxer Micky Ward told the Montreal Gazette. "But, more important, he was a friend."

During his 16-year career, Gatti, who was born in Italy but was raised in Montreal, became a world champion in two weight classes and compiled a 40-9 with 31 knockouts.

Arturo Gatti

I don't believe Arturo Gatti committed suicide either. He was too cool.
