Search is on for missing Philly parrot

Philadelphia -- A baby parrot decided it liked Philadelphia so much it fled the city's zoo to join a flock of pigeons out to see the town, zoo officials say.

Now, after an exhaustive search, the Philadelphia Zoo is assuming the 6-month-old Sun Conure has left the zoo grounds and is seeing the local sights, the Philadelphia Daily News reported Saturday.

The parrot was one of four Sun Conures who were performing as part of zoo's Festival of Flight show. Zoo spokesman Bill Larson said it must have gotten confused by the pigeons.

"This was a young bird, 5 or 6 months old, so we believe it got distracted because of its relative youth and inexperience," Larson said. "We took the first 24 hours to comb the grounds -- we have a kajillion trees here. But at this time we just have to assume he is off-grounds."

He appealed to the public to report any sightings of colorful birds about the size of a human hand, sporting mostly yellow feathers with a green tail, orange feathers ringing its eyes and a black beak, the newspaper said.
