Jackson had gone into full cardiac arrest at his home and paramedics were unable to revive the eccentric entertainer known as the King of Pop, the entertainment news Web site TMZ said. Emergency workers reportedly performed CPR on him in the ambulance as he was transported to UCLA Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Citing law enforcement sources, the Los Angeles Times said robbery-homicide detectives were investigating the circumstances of the performer's death, even though there was no evidence of wrongdoing. The Los Angeles County coroner's office will conduct an autopsy to determine how the father of three children died.
TMZ said the post-mortem exam is to be performed Friday.
A large crowd had gathered outside UCLA Medical Center and continued to grow throughout the afternoon.
Jackson's brother, Jermaine, told reporters at the hospital that medical personnel worked hard to save Michael's life.
"His personal physician, who was with him (at the house) at the time, attempted to resuscitate my brother, as did paramedics," Jermaine Jackson said. "A team of highly skilled doctors, including emergency physicians and cardiologists, attempted to resuscitate him for a period of more than one hour, but were unsuccessful."
Michael Jackson, who is said to have suffered myriad health problems, was slated to start a 50-date residency at London's O2 arena next month. The concert series was widely viewed as his comeback with millions of people clamoring to buy tickets to the gigs, which were to be his first full concerts in nearly a decade.
The Indiana native and youngest member of the family pop group the Jackson Five grew up to enjoy a successful solo career with hits like "Thriller," "Beat It" and "Billie Jean." His moonwalk dance, military-style costumes and glittery glove also helped cement his place in pop-culture history.
Jackson's career was later overshadowed, however, by reports of bizarre behavior and excessive plastic surgery, as well as numerous legal and financial problems. He was plagued by child molestation accusations, but never convicted of abusing youngsters. He has maintained a relatively low profile in recent years.
The recording artist with the trademark falsetto voice is survived by his children -- Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince Michael Jackson II; his parents Joe and Katherine Jackson; and his siblings Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Randy and Janet Jackson.
Two marriages, to singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Presley and former dermatologist nurse Deborah Rowe, ended in divorce.

Michael...peace at last!
My condolences to Michael's family & friends & his many fans. I feel we have lost an amazing talent whom I truly enjoyed when he began with the Jackson 5 and ended as a solo artist. I have read many posts both in sorrow over his passing and in celebration of it by those who felt he was guilty of the many sins he was accused of. I just want to let you know that God will be Michael's judge and only He knows the truth about Michael and it is now between God and Michael to sort out the good and/or bad in Michael's life. I doubt if anyone has stopped to think about the little boy who was forced to grow up to fast in the limelight of stardom. He lost his childhood but continued to strive for childhood pleasures that he missed out on as he grew to adulthood. There is no doubt that in his adulthood he had many internal conflicts between his lost childhood and the man he became. I feel his eccentricities, which he has been labeled and condemned for, were merely the cries of the man/child who missed out on so many of life's joys & experiences and was continually striving to recapture those missing childhood dreams and ideals. Are any of us perfect and without fault, be it in thought or deed, at some point in our lives? I know we are all human and have made mistakes or been misunderstood so none of us has the right to condemn Michael or anyone else unless you were there and saw it with your own eyes. No one can deny he had an astounding talent whether you liked him or not or liked his style of music or not. His talents were a gift from God for whatever reason and Michael will forever be ensconced as one of the greatest performers of our time.
God bless you Michael for what you have given us.

Re: Psychologist Pens "Bittersweet" Tribute to Michael Jackson: Addresses psychological significance of star's life/death
Canadian-born Californian singer/songwriter/psychologist, Dr BLT has penned a song about Michael Jackson called "Goodbye Michael Jackson (Bittersweet Legacy)" that offers a social psychological perspective on Michael Jackson as a pop culture phenomenon. I am in total shock! My deepest empathy goes out to his entire family as well as friends and family. To all the heartless jerks who are still talking about events from the past, F#$% off! Leave this man alone! In death people are cruel. He was a human being that was someone's son, brother, cousin, uncle, etc. He's GREATLY loved and will be missed by many. I love you Mike!

whoever said he should be
whoever said he should be shot to death is an asshole.
Michael Jackson was a gentle soul who was accused of something that was never proven. Any of us could be accused of something, and it doesn't mean we did it.
He was a great artist, and he will be greatly missed.
RIP Michael Jackson
