Grasshoppers descend on Utah

Salt Lake City -- Utah officials said Clear Wing grasshoppers that have invaded portions of the state could be a problem for the next three summers.

Clint Burfitt, an entomologist for the Utah Department of Agriculture, said the grasshoppers that have invaded parts of Sanpete and Tooele Counties as well as the Uintah Basin can infest an area with 2,000 insects per square foot and can mean disaster for local farms and ranches, KUTV, Salt Lake City, reported Wednesday.

Burfitt said that while the state is not spraying the infected areas, it does offer a cost sharing program for residents who privately arrange for their property to be sprayed.
