Houston's Ivan Rodriguez, who played most of his career for Texas, established a major league record by catching his 2,227th game. That broke the mark established by Carlton Fisk in 1993.
Rodriguez, however, was charged with two errors Wednesday -- both of which led to Texas runs.
Rodriguez was given a fifth-inning error, although his throw to second appeared perfect, in his bid to catch Omar Vizquel stealing. Vizquel was able to kick the ball out of the glove of second baseman Kazuo Matsui and advanced to third when the ball trickled into center.
Vizquel then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ian Kinsler, giving Texas a 4-3 lead. The Astros forced extra innings when Hunter Pence hit a solo homer in the eighth.
Kinsler opened the 10th by reaching on a fielding error by third baseman Jeff Keppinger, then stole second and went to third on a single by Michael Young. Hank Blalock was intentionally walked to load the bases and Nelson Cruz popped out, bringing up Murphy.
Murphy sliced a 1-1 pitch from Jeff Fulchino (2-2) into left field for the game-winning hit.
C.J. Wilson (4-3) got the win by throwing the final two innings.
