MLB: New York Yankees 9, New York Mets 8

NEW YORK, June 12: A two-run error in the bottom of the ninth Friday helped the New York Yankees edge the New York Mets 9-8 in the opener of the inter-league Subway Series.

The Mets were clinging to an 8-7 lead when two runs scored after Luis Castillo dropped a two-out popup by Alex Rodriguez. David Wright's RBI double had given the Mets the 8-7 lead with two outs in the eighth.

Hideki Matsui, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira all hit homers, while both Jeter and Cano had two hits for the Yankees, who ended their three-game losing streak.

The winner was closer Mariano Rivera (1-2).

Ryan Church led the Mets with a hit and three RBI. Garry Sheffield had two hits and two RBI, Carlos Beltran knocked in a run, and Wright had two hits for the Mets, who have lost three in a row.

The losing pitcher was closer Francisco Rodriguez (1-1).
