Grain futures head lower Friday

Chicago -- Grain futures traded sharply lower Friday on the Chicago Board of Trade as the dollar regained some strength and stock markets were flat in New York.

Corn was off 14 3/4 to off 15 1/2, soybeans were off 13 1/4 to off 21 1/2, wheat was off 8 1/2 to off 10 and oats were off 6.

Corn futures, linked to oil in ethanol production, fell in sympathy with lower oil prices Friday. Wheat fell while rain in the wheat belt began holding back crop progress. Canadian crops in western provinces, including soybeans, were reportedly 10 or more days behind normal growth.
The prices:

Corn: Jul 4.25 1/2, off 15 1/2; Sep 3.34 1/2, off 15 1/2; Dec 4.47 3/4, off 15 1/2; Mar 4.59 1/2, off 14 3/4.

Soybeans: Jul 12.45 1/2, off 21 1/2; Aug 11.71 1/4, off 14 1/4; Sep 11.08 1/2, off 16 1/4; Nov 10.76 1/2, off 13 1/4.
