Piglet rescued from highway median

Toronto -- Toronto Humane Society officials say a piglet found on the inside median of a major highway will never become part of the human food chain.

Monday, 31-year-old Brian Bowes was driving to work when he told the Toronto Sun he did a double take after spotting the months-old piglet lying on the inner median of Highway 401, north of the city.

He stopped and ran back to the 14-pound female piglet and covered it with a blanket.

"She was just shivering. I think she was just scared," he said.

He took the pig to the Toronto Humane Society, where veterinarians found she had a broken front leg along with numerous lacerations, likely caused by falling from a moving truck, the newspaper said.

The pig was named Wiggles by the humane society staff. They said they would seek a home for it in a petting zoo or somewhere it wouldn't face being trucked to a slaughterhouse again, the Sun said.
