The BBC reported the gigs were scrapped because frontman Dave Gahan is undergoing tests after suffering gastroenteritis this week.
The group issued a statement apologizing to their fans for "this inconvenience."
"(We) wish Dave a speedy recovery," the BBC quoted the band as saying in the statement.
Depeche Mode recently released "Sounds of the Universe," their 12th full-length album.

Please, don't be so
Please, don't be so "imaginative", he IS human, and humans get sick. Don't make a very common illness into a drog withdrawal...
Maybe, maybe not.
Gastroenteritis is NOT a symptomatic manifestation of opiate withdrawal. Admittedly, withdrawal might mimic the similar symptoms, but hey, I think Gahan would have access to at least methadone 24/7 if he's still using/wrestling with withdrawals from a habit. I mean, no multi-millionaire user (if, of course, he's using) could ever get caught so short, surely? Anyway, see highlighted section of the link below:

Gahan still a smackhead
He's gotta go back into rehab for a few weeks before the tour sets off. "Gastroenteritis" is caused by sudden opiate withdrawal, which means Dave couldn't score over in Turkey or whereever he was. So he's back to NYC for some emergency rehab.
Calling Dr. Benway
Another OD for poor Gahan.
