Rowing club negotiating for stolen statue

Malmo, Sweden. -- An official at a rowing club in the Swedish city of Malmo says the site is negotiating with an individual who stole the club's beloved "Indian" statue.

Malmo Rowing Club official Peter Kauranen said "The Indian" statue, a replica of an original statue created by Carl Milles, was stolen last fall by an unidentified thief, who has since contacted the club to sell the item back at a price, The Local said Sunday.

"The thief has realized that the statue is so well known that it can't be sold at auction. Now he wants to be compensated for 'his expenses'," Kauranen said.

But Kauranen admits the rowing club is struggling to raise the funds to meet the thief's demanded payment, which was not disclosed.

"It has not gone that well so far. We don't have the money that they want," he said.

The Local said police have closed their case regarding the 2008 theft of the club's statue.
