AT&T buys some Verizon territories

Washington -- U.S. telecommunications company AT&T Inc. says it has agreed to buy some assets of competitor Verizon Wireless to meet Verizon's antitrust requirements.

Verizon's move along with Vodafone Group PLC to purchase Alltel Corp. for $28.1 billion this year included a requirement from U.S. officials that it divest itself of 2.1 million wireless phone subscribers and radio spectrum in 22 states, The Wall Street Journal reported.

AT&T said Friday its purchase from Verizon included 1.5 million subscribers in mainly rural areas that are mostly former Alltel territories, the Journal said, adding that Verizon agreed to purchase a few service areas from AT&T for $240 million in a separate transaction.

An unnamed person familiar with the deal told the newspaper that AT&T made sure to avoid buying Alltel markets where it would gain too much market share and attract antitrust attention of its own.

1.5 million users at $55 a month * 12 months, that's $990mil. Not a bad deal for them.
