MLB: St. Louis at Washington canceled

Washington -- Sunday's contest between the Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals in Washington was canceled because of rain.

No makeup date was announced because the teams play in different National League divisions and it likely will not have a bearing on this season's playoff picture.

Sunday's cancellation followed a lengthy rain delay before the game's scheduled start. It ended the Cards' lone visit to Washington this season.

The Cardinals, whose 17-8 mark equals the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL's best record, won two of the three games played at Nationals Park.

The Nationals, at 6-17, have the NL's worst record, but recorded a 6-1 win Saturday.

Washington is scheduled for a three-game series at St. Louis Aug. 28-30.
