The increase is based on the addition of a third cruise ship that will house Royal Canadian Mounted Police and armed forces security personnel for the games, The Province newspaper in Vancouver reported.
Cpl. Jen Allan of the RCMP's 2010 Integrated Security Unit told the newspaper it was determined two ships weren't enough.
"There are two contracts within this process: one is with Holland America out of Seattle and the other is Carnival Cruise Lines out of Miami," she said.
A source in Miami told The Province the three ships are the Carnival Elation
and Holland America's MS Statendam and MS Oosterdam.
The original request for proposals called for 1,100 beds from Jan. 12 next year, rising to 5,300 from Jan. 28 to March 2, but Allan said she couldn't divulge the new numbers because of security.
