South African election a sign of mature democracy, says president

Over 23 million South Africans have registered to vote in Wednesday's elections, BuaNews reported.

"We are of the view that the level of enthusiasm displayed during the campaigning and level of participation by young and old people indicates that our democracy is vibrant," President Motlanthe said.

"The country's democracy did not allow abuse of power and those who said it was floundering would eat an humble pie. Our checks and balances are in place," he said after visiting a poll centre of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The president praised the IEC for its efforts to conduct a successful election.

He said the country was proud of the work done by the IEC and that state organs are ready to assist the IEC during the elections.

Motlanthe welcomed the 333 international observers who have arrived in the country to witness the elections.
