Punished girl in coma, no charges against teacher

New Delhi, India April 17 -- Eleven-year-old Shano Khan, who slipped into a coma after being punished by her teacher, was stated to be in a critical state Friday but no case was registered in the matter as the Delhi Police was yet to receive a medical report from the hospital.

Shano slipped into a coma Wednesday after being punished by her class teacher Manju in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) primary school in Narela in outer Delhi for failing to recite the alphabet.

"The girl continues to be in coma and was shifted to the Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan Hospital Thursday evening after her condition deteriorated," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer Delhi) Atul Katiyar told IANS.

Shano's father, Mohammed Ayub Khan, said: "Doctors here have told us that she has lost consciousness and is on life support system. Her chances of survival are remote."

"Police have not yet registered a complaint in the matter. The MCD has suspended the teacher who punished Shano but this will not bring our daughter back," a sobbing Khan said.

According to police, they are waiting for the medical report from the hospital to register a case against the teacher.
