U.S. markets mixed on employment news

New York -- U.S. stock indexes were mixed Friday after the Labor Department said the unemployment rate moved up to 8.5 percent in March with 663,000 jobs lost.

In early afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average lost 36.48 points, or 0.46 percent, to 7,941.60. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 0.08 percent, 0.68 points, to 833.70. The Nasdaq composite index gained 5.76 points, 0.36 percent, to 1,608.39.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury bond fell 1 6/32 to yield 2.904 percent.

The euro fell to $1.3429, compared to Thursday's $1.3443. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar rose to 99.97 yen, compared to Thursday's 99.54 yen.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei average gained 30.06 points to 8,749.84, up 0.34 percent.

In London, the FTSE 100 index lost 95.30 points, 2.31 percent, to 4,029.67.
