Many poor young graduates had approached State Bank Of India in Bodinayakanur at Tamil Nadu. The Bank didn’t even spare the parents!!</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img src="http://www.themoneytimes.com/files/imagecache/picturethumb/sbi.jpg" alt="" title="" class="imagecache imagecache-picturethumb imagecache-default imagecache-picturethumb_default" width="180" height="135" /> </div> </div> </div> <p><strong>SBI gets angry</strong></p> <p>It was a humiliating experience for young graduates who had availed SBI’s educational loan from the State Bank of India situated at Bodinayakanur in Theni district in Tamil Nadu. When the students had failed to clear the Bank’s amount, the SBI branch had put the students and their parents’ photographs on show. </p> <p>The Bank believed that this open exhibition of the photographs of the defaulters would shame the students to shell out the money. The outstanding loans handed out to the defaulting students’, ranges from Rs.40, 000 to Rs. 5 lakh. </p> <p><strong>Defaulters brought to task</strong></p> <p>Was this State Bank of India’s way of shaming the families of the defaulters? We think so!! They are pressurizing the students to clear the dues but the enraged students are not very happy and they have taken to protesting against the bank. A student under the cover of anonymity blurted out “This is a shame. In rural areas, none would marry us. We are poor people, now ashamed."</p> <p>SBI better watch out because many activists have blurted out that say this is sheer violation of human rights.</p> <p>Mr Henry Tiphagne, Executive Director of People's Watch was heard commenting "Would they ever be willing to portray the photograph of Mr Vijay Mallya for all the payments he has not paid back banks for years? This is a loss of dignity and human rights for the poor people. They should resort to legal recourse even in the worst case."</p> <p><strong>Violation of rights?</strong></p> <p>The interest amount is high and ends up as a liability for the helpless parents’ .They tend to put off clearing the educational loans of their graduate children, till the young students get a good job. The sad part is that the present economic recession makes sure that all the students do not get a lucrative job or in worse cases they have no jobs at all.</p> <p>An educationist, Dr TR Balakrishnan, showing concern over the issue suggests that the interest should be waived off. He was heard commenting "Like they do for farmers, the government could consider extending time and waiving off interests. If they are capable they have to pay back the principal. But banks should adopt legal measures to recover."</p> <p>As the State Bank of India officials profess by the rule book, The Reserve Bank of India has decided to take matters into its hands and is trying to come with a way out. But will the scare of the educational loan payment force the students to give up on higher studies? Only the economy and the system can decide on this 10 year old Educational loan system.</p> Bodinayakanur in Theni district in Tamil Nadu defaulters defaulting students’ India interest loan repayment Loans Loans Photo display SBI SBI’s educational loan State Bank of India Top Story Tue, 13 Aug 2013 08:22:42 +0000 Minnie Mahendru 1701713473 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Mortgage servicers reach compromise decree on foreclosure fiasco http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20110414/mortgage-servicers-reach-compromise-decree-foreclosure-fiasco-id-101701709925.html <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The officials from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Justice Department and 10 state attorneys general met with representatives of 14 largest mortgagers of the U.S. and reached a settlement to compensate house owners who incurred losses due to faulty foreclosures.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img src="http://www.themoneytimes.com/files/imagecache/picturethumb/foreclosure%20notice.png" alt="" title="" class="imagecache imagecache-picturethumb imagecache-default imagecache-picturethumb_default" width="180" height="120" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>This is the first set of sanctions against these institutions.</p> <p><strong>Regulators trying for a global settlement</strong><br /> The present settlement can help the Justice Department in ascertaining the magnitude of fines to be imposed on these institutions, Tom Perrellli, associate attorney general, involved in the negotiations, expressed hope.</p> <p>“This has been a very broad interagency effort.
