Cooperstown, N.Y. -- Dave Van Horne, the play-by-play broadcaster for the Florida Marlins, Wednesday was named the 2011 recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award.
Van Horne previously broadcast Montreal Expos games.
"Dave Van Horne introduced Major League Baseball to English-speaking fans in Montreal, and his voice became the standard for two generations of Expos fans," baseball Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said.
"Since 2001, Dave has energized Marlins fans in South Florida with his infectious love for the game, his excitable play-by-play, and his signature 'Up, up and away' home-run calls."

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. -- Free-agent first baseman Carlos Pena said Wednesday he's going to the Chicago Cubs for the 2011 season.
MLB.com reported Pena and the Cubs have reached agreement on a one-year contract for $10 million. The deal was worked out during the winter baseball meetings in Florida.
"I think when I looked at all of my options, and the teams that were interested, I just thought this was the perfect fit for me," Pena said.
Pena, 32, hit just .196 last year for Tampa Bay but led the Rays with 28 homers and managed a .325 on-base percentage thanks to 87 walks.

Cincinnati -- The Cincinnati Reds and catcher Ramon Hernandez have reached agreement on a one-year contract, the team said Monday.
Terms were not disclosed, but MLB.com reported it is worth $3 million.
"We wanted to provide our young pitching staff with some continuity. We felt all of our pitchers were comfortable pitching to Ramon," Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty said. "We also like his production at the plate. Our catchers were very solid last year offensively."
Hernandez, 34, posted a .297 batting average with seven home runs and 48 RBI in 97 regular-season games. He played a key role in helping the Reds win the National League Central Division last season.

New York -- New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman was set Wednesday to meet with free agent Texas Rangers pitcher Cliff Lee, MLB.com reported.
The Web site, citing an unnamed baseball source, said the Yankees' boss would meet with the left-handed ace and his agent, Darek Braunecker, in Arkansas.
Cashman has said signing Lee, who guided the Rangers past New York and into the World Series this season, is a top priority for the Yankees this offseason. The team didn't waste much time, reportedly first reaching out to him Sunday night only minutes after free agents rules allowed.

Arlington, Texas -- Tim Lincecum allowed one run over eight innings and Edgar Renteria homered Monday, leading San Francisco to a 3-1 win over Texas and a World Series title.
Lincecum (2-0) yielded three hits, walked two and struck out 10 in a dominating performance that enabled the Giants to win the 2010 World Series 4-games-to-1 and take their first championship since 1954 when the franchise was still based in New York.
Lincecum and the Rangers' Cliff Lee (0-2) engaged in a scoreless pitchers' duel over six innings. But the Giants broke it open in the seventh when Cody Ross and Juan Uribe singled and Renteria smacked a three-run homer into the left-center field stands.

Arlington -- Madison Bumgarner hurled eight shutout innings and Aubrey Huff hit a two-run homer Sunday in San Francisco's 4-0 defeat of Texas in Game 4 of the World Series.
Bumgarner, a rookie left-hander, dominated baseball's top-hitting team from the start, allowing only three hits, walking two and striking out six as the Giants took a commanding 3-games-to-1 lead over the Rangers in the 2010 Fall Classic.
Bumgarner (1-0) allowed only one runner to reach as far as second base, and at age 21 became the fourth-youngest pitcher to ever start and win a World Series game.
Brian Wilson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to complete the shutout.

Arlington -- Colby Lewis held San Francisco to two runs over seven-plus innings Saturday and the Texas Rangers bounced back to win Game 3 of the World Series 4-2.
Lewis limited the Giants to five hits, walking two and striking out six over 7 2/3 innings, allowing Rangers to reverse a dispiriting two-loss start to their first Fall Classic.
Mitch Moreland belted a three-run homer in the second inning to set the tone and Josh Hamilton added a solo shot in the fifth for the victors.
Neftali Feliz fanned two batters in a 1-2-3 ninth to get the save for the Rangers, who will attempt the even the series at 2-2 Sunday when they send Tommy Hunter to the mound.
The Giants got homers from Cody Ross and Andres Torres in the setback.

San Francisco -- Matt Cain threw 7 2/3 shutout innings Thursday and San Francisco put on a late surge to seize control of the World Series with a 9-0 victory over Texas.
San Francisco battered the Texas bullpen for seven runs in the eighth inning to blow open what had been a tense contest featuring a duel between Cain and C.J. Wilson.
The one-sided triumph left the Giants holding a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-seven series, which will resume Saturday with the first World Series game ever played in Arlington, Texas.
The teams combined for 18 runs, 25 hits and six errors in San Francisco's Game 1 victory and until the late-game explosion by the Giants, Game 2 was very different.

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. -- The death by auto and drunken driving trial of former major league baseball player Jim Leyritz begins Monday with jury selection in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Leyritz, who played for the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and other teams over 11 seasons, is charged with driving while intoxicated, running a red light and causing a crash that killed Fredia Ann Veitch of Plantation, Fla., in December 2007.
Veitch, 30, was thrown from her vehicle.
Leyritz had been out celebrating his 44th birthday with friends at Fort Lauderdale bars, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
Leyritz, 46, of Davie, Fla., faces prison time of four to 15 years if convicted.

Philadelphia -- Juan Uribe socked a tie-breaking, eighth-inning homer Saturday and the San Francisco Giants downed Philadelphia 3-2 to win the National League pennant.
Uribe's homer to right field off Ryan Madson (0-1) barely cleared the fence, but it was just long enough to break a 2-2 tie.
Tim Lincecum and Brian Wilson made the lead hold, handing the Giants a 4-games-to-2 victory over Philadelphia in the National League Championship Series.
San Francisco collected the 18th NL pennant in its 128-year franchise history and now goes on to meet the Texas Rangers in the World Series, which starts Wednesday at AT&T Park in San Francisco.
