The conflict in the data of glaciologists and climatologists of Alps seems to be resolved after this endeavor by NASA. </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img src="http://www.themoneytimes.com/files/imagecache/picturethumb/alps.jpg" alt="" title="" class="imagecache imagecache-picturethumb imagecache-default imagecache-picturethumb_default" width="180" height="112" /> </div> </div> </div> <p><strong> End of Ice Age </strong></p> <p>Before informing you about the postulates of the study, let me explain to you about 'Ice Age'. The Ice Age was a period between the 14th and 19th centuries and was earmarked by the expansion of mountain glaciers and some drop in temperatures in Europe.</p> <p>Recently, a NASA-led team enlightened the minds of Europe about the retreating snow cover from Alps irrespective of the cool temperatures and enough snowfall in this period. There was good amount of decrease in snow cover on Alps, and the snow withdrew at the rate of 0.6 miles during this time. Facts state that the retreat of snow began in the 1860s which is dubbed as the end of the Little Ice Age by the scientists. </p> <p><strong> NASA-led Research </strong></p> <p>Amidst all speculations and debates, and to understand the retreat of snow cover on Alps, NASA researchers and collaborators assessed historical records, ancient ice from cores in glaciers, and modern air pollution studies. They modeled the glacial behavior and worked to understand the pattern of glacier retreat on Alps.</p> <p>The facts have been stated in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and aver that black carbon, which is the strongest sunlight-absorbing atmospheric particle deposited on the snow-cover, started to collect on the lower region of Alps. </p> <p>The researchers, headed by Thomas Painter, a snow and ice scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., then shifted to history to draw some conclusion. </p> <p>The scientists extracted the information from the ice cores drilled from many European mountain glaciers. Further, levels of carbon particles, blanketed in the ice core layers, were studied by them. </p> <p>Eventually, the region where the levels of black carbon was high or low was seen and spotted by the researchers. For this, they saw the modern observations of how pollutants are distributed in the Alps. </p> <p>They studied computer models of glacier behavior and recorded weather conditions to delve more into the subject. Here it was noticed that there was a huge impact of lower-elevation pollution. </p> <p>After considering this impact, the researchers concluded as they found the observations to be parallel to the historic record of glacial retreat. </p> <p>Well, this was the phase when Europe was encased in the soot of industrialization. There was a great use of coal by Europe to heat homes and huge power consumption for transportation. So, humungous quantities of black carbon and other dark particles wafted into the air because of such practices. </p> <p><strong> Scientists Speak </strong> </p> <p>According to the co-author Waleed Abdalati, director of the Cooperative Institute for Research and Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder, "This study uncovers likely human fingerprints on our changing environment. It's a reminder that the actions we take have far-reaching impacts on the environment in which we live."</p> 1800s Glacial retreat Alps Europe ice age NASA research Science & Medicine Technology Top Story Wed, 04 Sep 2013 09:45:32 +0000 Neha Dutt 1701713548 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Area 51: Tight Lipped on UFOs, Government officially accepts its Existence http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20130819/area-51-tight-lipped-ufos-government-officially-accepts-its-existence-id-170171349 <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Some unnamed critic tweeted that the US government has surely shifted UFOs to Area 52. Of course, world’s bemused right now and they have the reason to do so after the revelation of this secret under the sun. </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img src="http://www.themoneytimes.com/files/imagecache/picturethumb/area51.jpg" alt="" title="" class="imagecache imagecache-picturethumb imagecache-default imagecache-picturethumb_default" width="180" height="137" /> </div> </div> </div> <p><strong> Acceptance by the Government about ‘Area 51’</strong></p> <p>Recently, the human race was a little shocked to hear about the government’s acceptance of the fact that there lies Area 51 on the map. What the ears heard was not something new but its acceptance fetched a grin on many faces. Is it a secret that was covered till date or is there another angle to this admittance of fact? Whatever it is-Half-truth or a complete lie, that's for the future to witness. Besides, the government has not broken ice about the Aliens in the region. </p> <p>Oops! But I am sure you must be a little inquisitive about the territory that encapsulates such figures. The report throws light on the fact that it is the Shangri-La region of alien hunters and abounds the Mojave Desert which is roughly about 100 miles north of Las Vegas. </p> <p>Besides, Area 51 is also a metaphor that science fiction movies often carry. It may be immaterial right now, but this also shows the curiosity and speculations that have always cemented with the theory of Area 51. </p> <p><Strong> CIA Documents </strong></p> <p>Now, the information about the ‘Area 51’ resides in the CIA documents posted online on Thursday. A reputed researcher from the National Security Archive at George Washington University confirmed the fact. He researched a report of CIA that possessed the information about the Ultrasonic-2spy plane. </p> <p>Till date, the government was reluctant in accepting even the existence of Area 51. In a 1992 report dubbed as "The U2 and OXCART Programs, 1954-1974", the CIA mentions about the ‘Area 51’ quite frequently. It was dubbed as a site that was used for some veiled testing for the U2 and A-12 OXCART high altitude surveillance aircraft.</p> <p>It also throws light on the first day on April 25, 1955, when the CIA project director Richard Bissell and Air Force officer Col. Osmund Ritlandt first selected the region as base to carry out secret testing flight programs. </p> <p>Government’s hesitation to accept or admit to the region paved the way for a referral of Groom Lake salt. It’s a landing strip for the U-2 and another stealth aircraft. Well, this is what we were accustomed to hearing from the government.</p> <p>But after the report, which was acquired by the George Washington University’s National Security Archive through Freedom of Information Act, the government finally made an official statement about its existence. </p> <p><strong> UFOs Under the Sun</strong></p> <p>The US government perpetually negated the UFO reports and refrained from accepting the existence of Area 51. This paved the way for a multitude of theories of the base. Here the speculations ranged from a landing strip or a hideaway for alien spacecraft, to a hospital and a prison for ETs.</p> <p>However, even now the government has not spoken about the UFOs. </p> <p>So, a truth that is not complete is not exactly termed as 'The Truth’. So, here we know that probably a lot has been concealed than spoken about!!</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-imagecaption"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Aliens inside Area 51</p> </div> </div> </div> Area 51 CIA documents extra terrestrials George Washington University National Security Archive Science & Medicine Technology Top Story UFO United States Mon, 19 Aug 2013 12:48:22 +0000 Neha Dutt 1701713498 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Electric cars won’t help reduce air emissions – Study http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20140123/electric-cars-won%E2%80%99t-help-reduce-air-emissions-%E2%80%93-study-id-1701713800.html <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Electric drive vehicles (EDVs) were designed to combat the rising air pollution levels. Rising oil price and air pollution levels lead to the development of such vehicles.</p> <p>But higher emissions from power plants manufacturing such vehicles has wiped out some of the benefits of EDVs, researchers believe.</p> <p>Moreover, electric driven passenger vehicles account for a small share (only 20 percent of carbon dioxide emissions)of total emissions. </p> <p>“It's because some of the benefits of EDVs are wiped out by higher emissions from power plants. Another factor is that passenger vehicles make up a relatively small share of total emissions, limiting the potential impact of EDVs in the first place," said DeCarolis. </p> <p>“From a policy standpoint, this study tells us that it makes more sense to set emissions reductions goals, rather than promoting specific vehicle technologies with the idea that they'll solve the problem on their own."</p> <p>The study titled, “How Much Do Electric Drive Vehicles Matter to Future U.S. Emissions?” is reported online in Environmental Science &amp; Technology. </p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-imagecaption"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Electric Drive Vehicles will be ineffective in reducing air emission levels, a new study from the North Carolina State University has found.</p> </div> </div> </div> air emissions air pollution battery electric vehicles EDV Electric Drive Vehicles Hybrid cars plug-in hybrids Science & Medicine Technology Top Story United States Thu, 23 Jan 2014 06:48:06 +0000 Jamie Anderson 1701713800 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Global Warming: 7 biggest contributors identified http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20140116/global-warming-7-biggest-contributors-identified-id-1701713790.html <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Global warming is perhaps the single biggest threat we face globally. Using historical data, the researchers at Concordia University included carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels; methane, nitrous oxide, sulphate aerosols along with changes in land use such as deforestation (cutting down of trees). These together are responsible for 0.7 °C of the world's 0.74 °C warming during the aforementioned time frame. </p> <p>The study ranked the US as the clear leader, responsible for 22 percent of the 0.7 °C global temperature increase. China accounts for 9 percent of the observed warming, followed by Russia (8 percent), Brazil and India (7 percent each) and Germany and the UK (5 percent each).</p> <p>"It was surprising to see some of the less-industrialised countries with such high rankings, but this also reflects their CO2 emissions related to deforestation," says Matthews, who is an associate professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment.</p> <p>While calculating individual country’s contribution to global warming by its population, Matthews and colleagues were surprised to find that that developed countries were at the top seven per-capita positions in the list of 20 largest total emitters. They said the UK leads the list of largest emitters, with the US and Canada falling in the second and third place respectively. In this list China and India fall to the bottom place. </p> <p>"The UK's position in the top-seven emitters is strongly tied to historic use of coal, which constitutes a large fraction of their cumulative fossil fuel carbon dioxide emissions. By contrast, much more recent coal use in China has led to a much faster current growth rate of cumulative carbon dioxide emissions, and hence a contribution to climate warming that will continue to increase rapidly in the coming years," say the study authors. </p> <p>Matthews and colleagues reported their findings in Environmental Research Letters.</p> <p>Edited by: Neelam Goswami</p> earth’s atmosphere global warming increasing temperature of Earth's surface India rising temperatures of the world Science & Medicine Technology Top Story Thu, 16 Jan 2014 16:52:44 +0000 Natalie James 1701713790 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Scientists stumble across the largest spiral galaxy known http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20130113/scientists-stumble-across-largest-spiral-galaxy-known-id-1701712738.html <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Astronomers have come across what they believe is the largest spiral galaxy ever seen.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img src="http://www.themoneytimes.com/files/imagecache/picturethumb/spiral-galaxy-ngc1232-1600.jpg" alt="Spiral galaxies are among the most beautiful to observe" title="Spiral galaxies are among the most beautiful to observe" class="imagecache imagecache-picturethumb imagecache-default imagecache-picturethumb_default" width="180" height="135" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>We are usually so engrossed with ourselves and the world around us that we barely even stop to note that we are but a miniscule part of an ever-expanding Universe.</p> <p>Strewn across the Universe are millions of other galaxies like our very own Milky Way, overflowing with stars and possibly planets.</p> <p>Although astronomers have come across many galaxies in the past, the one that they have now stumbled across is the largest they have ever observed.</p> <p><strong>Tremendous size</strong><br /> Stretching across at over 500,000 light years, the galaxy is impressively huge. Well, the measurement of the galaxy’s size actually took several years of diligent research and observations from multiple instruments.</p> <p>NASA’s Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) has been instrumental in making out the size of the new spiral galaxy.</p> <p>Lead astronomer Rafael Eufrasio said in a statement to the press, “Without GALEX’s ability to detect the ultraviolet light of the youngest, hottest stars, we would never have recognized the full extent of this intriguing system.”</p> <p>Although the size of this new galaxy is majestic, it may not be able to retain its size. A part of the galaxy has been observed to be spinning off to form its own dwarf galaxy.</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-imagecaption"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Spiral galaxies are among the most beautiful to observe</p> </div> </div> </div> astronomer Rafael Eufrasio Astronomers Astronomy Galaxy Galaxy Evolution Explorer GALEX Milky Way Science & Medicine spiral galaxy Top Story ultraviolet light Sun, 13 Jan 2013 05:43:46 +0000 Yasser Ali 1701712738 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Achieve New Year resolutions with these apps http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20121226/achieve-new-year-resolutions-these-apps-id-1701712630.html <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>New Year is approaching fast and you might have a couple of resolutions ready, just like every other year in the past.
