The real-time driving directions will be displayed on the vehicle’s windscreen via the head-up display or HUD as it is called.

Garmin announced that the HUD will be wireless and will pair with compatible Smartphones that are Bluetooth-enabled, like the Android phone, Windows 8 powered phones and Apple’s iPhones.

More about the heads-up display

The company announces that the Heads-up display called the Gramin HUD is a gadget for navigation purposes that is used to project the directions the driver needs on to a transparent film. This film has been applied to the vehicle’s windshield from the inside.

The HUD desires a Windows 8 Smartphone, or a device with iOS to display the directions. The driver can manoeuver around the other cars on the road and is also able to focus by having the eyes fixed on the road. In this way the driver doesn’t have to keep a Smartphone in hand and thus is able to stay away from distractions that can cause accidents.

Just like the standalone GPS units, the heads-up display will tell the driver beforehand the lane to drive in. There is an inbuilt alarm system that will warn the driver to maintain correct speed at turns etc. What else can the parent of an errant teenager want for the safety of their child? The alarm is incapable of being turned out easily, so the fast speed lovers better watch out!!

You don’t even have to worry about the day timings, folks, as the HUD will alter the brightness of display according to the natural light that is seen inside the car. The display screen will show the car’s current speed, the upcoming turn direction and its distance from the car.

Even the time of commencement of the trip can be roughly estimated by the HUD. So you will be able to steer around the traffic delays and make it on time, as the HUD will be informing about the road works and accidents in advance!! This smartphone-wristwatch connection will be via bluetooth. Also, a follow up of the Nexus Q is being developed.

At least one of these devices will be launched in fall, according to the WSJ.

Google’s Android operating system is the world’s most popular mobile software, available on three out of every four smartphones sold. A video game console could be the next big thing and help in expanding Android’s use beyond smartphones and tablets.

Google wants to make an Android-based video game console that allows users to not only play Android games on their smartphones and tablets, but also a full-powered system like the upcoming Xbox One or PlayStation 4. No hardware or software details are available at this point.

The WSJ also says Google is preparing to push Android onto even lower cost smartphone hardware. Its sources say the next release of Android — presumably the Key Lime Pie flavor — will be “better tailored to the lower-cost smartphones prevalent in developing countries with the aim of firming up Android’s market-share globally”.

One might ask why a video game console? Could it be Google’s answer to the Apple’s next TV release? Rumor has it that Apple plans to have its own dedicated game device and smartwatch in the near future. The Nexus Q followup looks like a TV box of some kind and will be the next generation Google TV. Google unveiled Nexus Q in June,2012,
but never released the product.

The Nexus Q is a cloud-based social streaming media player that can stream Google Play Music, Google Play Movies/TV, and YouTube content to your tablet, smartphone, or TV. The new version is expected to be cheaper.

Google also has some other Android offerings in the works, such as a Hewlett-Packard built laptop running Android. The January to March or first quarter ratings this year show that Apple is no more in the first five Smartphone choices but as far as higher profitability side is taken into account then Apple sure manages to clamber to take a place in the top five.

The recent data report bought forth by the International Data Corporation (IDC) confirm that as compared to the last year’s record, the Indian Smartphone market, in the first quarter of 2013, shows a growth of 24%. It’s the Android that has managed to dominate the Indian Smartphone market with a whopping share of 90% that is dominated by the sales in the lower end segment.

Apple v/s Karbonn and Micromax

An aggressive advertising campaign and a volley of discount schemes have made sure that Apple stays in the high sale segment in the recent months. But now Apple is marching a slow downslide, as its sale impetus has slowed.

Manasi Yadav, senior market analyst at IDC was heard commenting "Apple has always been a niche player in the country. Apple numbers in Q4 of 2012 were exceptional but their shipments actually saw a dip in Q1 of 2013 as per our numbers.”

Karbonn and Micromax are the chosen ones for the Indian customer base as they are treated as the best “value for money” offers in the Smartphone markets. Karbonn bags about 11% of the market and Micromax grabs about 19%.

Subsequently, these two hold the third and second place in Smartphone unit shipments recorded in the first quarter. Yadav comments "Their volumes are increasing quarter-on-quarter and they are giving tough competition to all the players. They are especially successful in tier-2 and tier-3 towns where brand names don't matter that much.”

The Nokia story

Nokia maybe getting a great feedback on its Lumia range and is also showing increasing sales. It enjoys the fourth position in Smartphone shipments at the moment and also shows promise for an increase in this.

The sales of the Blackberry have shown a slight slack or maybe counted as stagnant "Indian market is driven by low cost devices. They have also grown much faster when it comes to units," states Yadav.

She confirms further "Rupee depreciation will negatively impact Micromax and Karbonn especially since their margins are lower, but their volumes are increasing. So they might maintain low pricing as it is their USP."
advertising campaign Android Apple BlackBerry Cell Phones IDC India Indian market Indian Smartphone Markets Karbonn Lumia Micromax Nokia Samsung Top Story Tue, 25 Jun 2013 10:53:06 +0000 Minnie Mahendru 1701713261 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Facebook’s new mobile offering! Finally, Huawei has unraveled the device and though self-proclaimed, Huawei Ascend P6 is touted to be the World’s Slimmest Smartphone.

China's Huawei unveiled its flagship smartphone, the Ascend P6, at its first standalone launch event on Tuesday, underlining its ambitions to compete with Apple and Samsung in the top tier of mobile technology.

The company says the device, at 6.18 mm thick, is the world's slimmest. It has a 5 megapixel front-facing camera, designed for taking self-pics, or pictures of the owner to be shared on social media networks. The company picked the launch date - 6/18 (June 18) - to tie in with the smartphone's dimensions. The phone is also light in weight at 120 grams as most smartphones fall around the 135 grams mark.

Specifications and features

The phone runs on the latest Android version, Jelly Bean 4.2. The phone has skipped the 5-inch phablet mark and instead comes with a 4.7-inch capacitive touch-screen. The screen resolution is 720 x 1280 pixels. Huawei has also decided to launch their in-house UI termed Emotion UI 1.6 with the Huawei Ascend P6.

Under the hood runs a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor with a Huawei K3V2 chipset. There are no multiple internal memory variants, which is a little disappointing as what is offered with the Huawei Ascend P6 is just 8 GB. Expandable memory is also just 32 GB, below expectations as most of the P6 competitors offer up to 64 GB expandable memory.

Industry analyst Ben Wood at CCS Insight said that at the right price the Ascend P6 would attract buyers who had not considered Huawei before.

"Huawei P6 is darn thin," he tweeted. But he added that the device was not, at this stage, compatible with the high speed, next generation 4G networks, which are being rolled out across the world.

Camera is one of the most interesting features of Huawei Ascend P6. The rear end-camera is the standard 8 MP with LED flash and supports most features and modes like geo-tagging, HDR, face and smile detection. However, the rear-end camera is not what has kicked up the excitement by a notch. It’s the front end camera.

With its sleek look and “elegant” design, we wonder if Huawei has limited the audience for the phone. Afterall, “elegance” is not on top of the list for phone buyers.

` Also, looking at the stress placed on the front-camera and a pink variant, coupled with elegance, we wonder if Huawei is targeting more of a female audience with the Huawei Ascend P6. The London show will focus on the company's Galaxy brand, which covers its Android phones and tablets, and the newer Ativ brand (Vita, speeled backwards), which is the unified name for its Windows Phones, as well as its Windows 8 and Windows RT laptops, tablets, and hybrids.

Samsung's press conference will begin at 2 p.m. Eastern time, 8 p.m. local time in London. For those not local, it’ll be livestreamed at Samsung’s mobile YouTube page.

Samsung, issued invitations under the heading “Samsung Premiere 2013 Galaxy & Ativ,” confirming that both Android and Windows devices will be unveiled during the event.

There’s a chance we could see a new Galaxy Note smartphone — the Note 2 was announced last August — and perhaps a refresh of the company’s Galaxy tablet line. Over the past few years, Samsung has been increasingly focused on its Note tablet lineup, but the company could potentially refresh its Galaxy Tab slates with a lower price to compete with other cheap Android tablets.

As for Ativ, Samsung’s brand for all of its Windows devices, we could potentially see Samsung explore new tablet and Ultrabook designs. Its Ativ smart PCs sport removable screens, so they can function as both tablets and notebooks. At this point, I’m excited to see what Samsung comes up with for the Windows 8 Ultrabook ecosystem.

Stepping up to the competition
The event, scheduled for June 20, will happen just one week after Apple's yearly developer conference, WWDC. Apple usually makes significant announcements about its upcoming software and hardware at the WWDC conference.

Besides, Microsoft has also scheduled its 2013 BUILD conference, which is scheduled to begin on June 26. Microsoft is likely to unveil Windows Blue, an update to Windows 8.

June is going to be a hell of a month for techies!

Samsung did include a few teaser pictures on its invitation though, and two of the images appear to show close-ups of a notebook computer. The invention facilitates browsing through photos and tagging them no matter which friend has uploaded them in their own profile.

Following Facebook's lead, Instagram has added tagging for friends and brands.

Photos of You-the new profile section of Instagram
The feature dubbed "Photos of You" will allow users to tag the friends in their filtered snaps which then automatically show up under your user name. This feature is the part of Instagram 3.5 and is available for both iPhones and Android platforms.

Once the photo is taken, a new button gives you the option to tag people and places. It may be referring to your favourite pizza joint or your BFF, this is the most greatest features in the latest version of Instagram.

Referring to this feature, Instagram says, "One of the most common things people do on Instagram is @ mention their friends when they want to add them to a photo." The new section, 'Photos Of You' plans on achieving that.

As the user browses your feed, the tags for that photo can be made by simply tapping the photo once. The tags of the photos will be seen once the cursor is placed on a particular place or a particular person much like how it works in Facebook.

Till now, tagging a particular friend would generate their story in the friend's News tab. However with the new update the tags are aggregated by the users and push notifications sent to all those tagged in that particular picture.

Photo tagging-useful feature:
Using this feature, photos can be tagged to places and people and it portrays a captured moment away from the "now". It's symbolic and one of the greatest photo capturing apps available in the recent times.

The previous features of Instagram like the photo maps were greatly appreciated by users and so will the new Photos Of You feature. The feature which is most liked by Instagrammers is its ability to be current and live in the present.

This feature was prevalent in Facebook too with the launch of timeline and would be soon be practised by the Instagram users as well. The history of every user would be seen, making the app very transparent and user friendly.

A feature to untag pictures would also be available in the new version of Instagram. This feature is available in case users have any apprehensions. They are given until May 16th to select whether they want to allow open tagging by any Instagrammers, or prefer to pick and choose which appear on you profile.

Photos will not be automatically added in the Photos Of You section, they need to be individually tagged by its photographer for them to be listed there.

Instagram is looking to impress many brands with this new feature. Especially brand pages like Burberry which can reap the benefits sown by Instagram. The Photos of You section is available in Burberry also where the photos being tagged by the users will be aggregated with @Burberry.

Before the final photo with the photo tags goes live, Instagram has an option for every user to turn on the Final approval. This feature is also available in Facebook.

Instagram's new feature available on iPhone and Android
The new version 3.5 version of the Instagram was launched simultaneously for both the iPhones and the Android. Both iPhone and Android users can download the new app for better photo tagging.

The updated version has many improved features than the previous version of the Instagram. The most important is probably the improvement in the image quality for photos being uploaded on Android 4.0 and above. This is going to make the Android phone users very happy, a definite plus for them as they wondered previously why their photos looked dull compared to their iPhone user friends.

The new profile section, Photos of You is a compilation of all the tagged photos of the user neatly in a memory pile, the brands should not take unnecessary advantage of this feature and instead be thrilled by its popularity among the various social networking sites and other advertising platforms.

This unique photo tagging feature would highlight some unique perspectives of brand reach and enabling when and who is engaging why?

Introducing 'Photos Of You', a new profile section for photo tagging in Instagram launched for iPhone and Android.

Android brands Facebook Instagram iPhone Markets photo sharing photo tagging social media social networks Technology Top Story United States Mon, 06 May 2013 09:50:33 +0000 Shikha.hyd 1701713167 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Mystery phone by LG resembles Nexus 5 or LG Optimus 2? http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20130506/mystery-phone-lg-resembles-nexus-5-or-lg-optimus-2-id-1701713166.html

The sparkling similarity between LG Optimus 2 and Google nexus 5 is a hot topic these days after the pictures were leaked from “evleaks”, a famous tool of Twitter and Facebook for leak images of smartphones.

Few have predicted that the latest pictures leaked on “evleaks” are that of next-gen Optimus G2 device but the partnership between Google and LG have also raised hopes for a launch of LG branded Nexus 5 device.
