MLS: Real Salt Lake 2, New York 0

Sandy, Utah, Oct. 15: Andy Williams broke a tie in the 80th minute Wednesday and Real Salt Lake improved its playoff chances by downing New York 2-0.

Salt Lake (10-11-7) moved past Toronto, D.C. United and FC Dallas with the victory and its 37 points leaves it just one point behind New England for the final MLS post-season berth.

New York, owner of the worst record in the league, has won just four times in 29 games.

Great Salt Lake high in mercury pollution

Salt lake city -- Mercury levels in Utah's Great Salt Lake are the highest of any body of water in the United States, say scientists studying the effect on animal and plant life.

"All we know is that there is a problem out there, but there's more to understanding how to deal with it," said Manusel Pearce, a spokesman for the Great Salt Lake Alliance.

A study now being completed could help show if mercury is drifting into Utah from Nevada's goldmines, and whether the 9 million to 12 million birds that migrate each year are absorbing mercury from the lake, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Friday.

Mercury levels in the lake typically are double those found in more than 90 percent of water sampled nationally, said state water quality specialist Jodi Gardberg.

MLS: Dallas 1, Houston 0

Frisco, Texas Aug. 6: Jeff Cunningham followed up a big game Saturday by scoring the only goal of the contest Thursday, giving Dallas a 1-0 decision over Houston.

Cunningham produced four goals in a 6-0 victory over Kansas City last weekend.

He scored in the 20th minute against Houston Thursday for the 113th goal of his career. Cunningham is the third leading scorer in the history of MLS.

Dallas (6-9-5) has won back-to-back games for the first time this season and moved into a share of third place in the Western Conference with Salt Lake.

Houston (10-6-5) still has the best record in the league despite posting only one win in its last five matches.

MLS: Real Salt Lake 1, San Jose 1

Sandy, Utah July 4: Chris Leach put the ball into his own goal in the first minute of extra time Friday, allowing Real Salt Lake to escape with a 1-1 tie against San Jose.

San Jose (3-8-4) appeared headed for its first two-game winning streak of the season before Leach's mishap. Salt Lake played with just 10 men for the final 20 minutes after Fabian Espindola was ejected for what was deemed to be a serious foul.

Arturo Alvarez gave San Jose a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute with his fifth goal of the season.

Salt Lake (5-6-5) remained unbeaten in its last five games.
