Ca. 'Ghosts of the Forest' studied

San Jose, Calif. -- California researchers say they are struggling to unravel the mystery of the "ghosts of the forest," rare albino saplings in the state's coastal redwood groves.

The world's only white evergreens, the rare genetic mutants appear and disappear seasonally, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported.

Researchers at Stanford University and the University of California, Santa Cruz, are hoping to learn how such helpless trees can survive.

"It is a great puzzle," said Ghia Euskirchen, director of the DNA Sequencing Program at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Power outage resolved; Sharks to play

San Jose, Calif. -- A power outage in San Jose, Calif., that threatened to cancel Tuesday's NHL Sharks-Red Wings game has been fixed and the game will go on, officials said.

Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment, managers of the HP Pavilion, said a power failure at the arena that began at 8:45 a.m. PST had been resolved, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The outage was "due to a problem with an on-site electrical switchgear," the company said in a statement.

"With the assistance of (Pacific Gas & Electric), the problem has been repaired," the statement said. "We do not expect the outage to have any impact on the Sharks/Red Wings game at 7:30 p.m. (PST) this evening."

Many of the Red Wings skipped a morning skate due to the outage.

More than 1,000 rats need new homes

San Jose, Calif. -- Animal groups in California said they are seeking homes for more than 1,000 rats discovered in a man's home during the filming of a reality TV show.

Rescuers said the rats, currently housed at Andy's Pet Shop in San Jose, were seized from a man's home during filming for an episode of A&E's "Hoarders," and will be spayed or neutered and adopted in pairs, KTVU-TV, Oakland, Calif., reported Tuesday.

"We had three litters born last night, two the night before," said Andy's Pet Shop manager Zoe Thoel. "So it's been nuts. Our estimate is about 1,000 to 1,200 without the new babies being born."

The rats were removed from a Los Angeles home and trucked to San Jose in a "climate controlled" vehicle, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
