Nadal, Djokovic claims World Finals wins

London -- World No. 1 Rafael Nadal rallied for a tough three-set victory in joining Novak Djokovic as round-robin winners Monday at the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Nadal rallied from being a set and a break down for a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over eighth-seeded Andy Roddick in Group A play. Djokovic, the No. 3 seed, opened the group's round-robin with a 6-3, 6-3 sweep of sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych.

Nadal was far-from sharp in the early going, committing two double faults in dropping serve in the match's second game. Roddick made that break stand for the set and was up a break early in the second before Nadal rallied.

Djokovic claims early World Finals win

London -- Novak Djokovic opened his group play at the ATP World Tour Finals in London with a straight-set win Monday over Tomas Berdych.

Djokovic, seeded third, didn't face a break point in taking a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the first match of the Group A round robin. World No. 1 Rafael Nadal was to meet eighth-seeded Andy Roddick later Monday in another Group A match.

Djokovic won a healthy 72 percent of the points on serve in beating the sixth-seeded Berdych. He was able to cash in three of seven break points he forced on Berdych, including one in the opening game of the match.

Berdych had two double faults in that first game and had to save four break points in the third game to avoid falling down two breaks.

He will now go on to face Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.

Federer beats Djokovic in Swiss Indoors

Basel, Switzerland -- Roger Federer topped Novak Djokovic in three sets Sunday and won his fourth Swiss Indoors tennis title in five years.

Federer, No. 2 in the world, defeated the third-ranked Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in a rematch of the 2009 Swiss Indoors final. Djokovic won that match, ending Federer's string of Swiss Indoors titles from 2006-08. Federer improved to 12-6 -- including 3-1 this year -- lifetime against Djokovic.

There were two service breaks in the first two sets. Federer won the first set behind a third-game break and Djokovic evened the match by breaking Federer's serve in the second game of the second set.

Djokovic begins Basel defense with win

Basel -- Defending champion Novak Djokovic got off to a good start Tuesday at the Swiss Indoors, dispatching Latvia's Ernests Gulbis 6-4, 6-2, in the first round.

The second-seeded Djokovic wasted little time with Gulbis and now goes on to face either Jarkko Nieminen of Finland or Germany's Daniel Brands at Basel, Switzerland.

Djokovic defeated hometown favorite and world No. 2 Roger Federer in last year's Basel finals. Federer advanced Monday with a first-round win over Aleksandr Dolgopolov.

The Swiss superstar will now face another Serb, Janko Tipsarevic, who moved on Tuesday with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin.

Djokovic takes rain-delayed China Open

Beijing -- Novak Djokovic picked up his second tournament title of the year with a straight-set win Monday at the rain-delayed China Open.

Djokovic, the world's No. 2-ranked player, topped eighth-seeded David Ferrer 6-2, 6-4. The match was set for Sunday but its start was delayed 4 1/2 hours by rain. Djokovic and Ferrer finally got in about 30 minutes of tennis, with Djokovic building a 3-1 lead, Sunday before play was postponed until Monday.

It was a workmanlike victory for Djokovic, who won 58 percent of the points and lost only 14 points in nine service games. He lost the only break point he faced and had four breaks in Ferrer's nine games serving.

Djokovic through to China Open quarters

Beijing -- Defending champion Novak Djokovic and fourth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko advanced Wednesday to the quarterfinals of the China Open tennis tournament.

Djokovic, the world No. 2-ranked men's player and seeded No. 1 in Beijing, won in a walkover when Mardy Fish withdrew because of an ankle problem. He'll next face Gilles Simon.

Davydenko took a tight 7-5, 7-5 decision from Marin Cilic. The match lasted nearly two hours and turned on Davydenko getting the lone service break of the second set. It was the 400th ATP match victory for Davydenko, who is the eighth active player to reach that milestone.

Djokovic to play first at Davis Cup semis

Belgrade -- World No. 2 Novak Djokovic was given the leadoff position for Serbia in its Davis Cup semifinal series against the Czech Republic.

Djokovic is coming off a runner-up finish Monday at the U.S. Open, a result that allowed him to pass Roger Federer in the rankings and return to the No. 2 spot.

The best-of-five Davis Cup series, to be played on a hard court indoors in Belgrade, begins Friday and ends Sunday with the winner moving to the Davis Cup finals Dec. 3-5 against the survivor of a semifinal between Argentina and France.

Nadal solid at No. 1, Djokovic up to 2nd

London -- Rafael Nadal's completion of the career Grand Slam cemented his hold on the world No. 1 spot in tennis and U.S. Open runner-up Novak Djokovic moved to No. 2.

Nadal finished off the rain-delayed Open with a four-set victory Monday over Djokovic. It was his ninth major tournament title but first at the U.S. Open. Nadal has won the French Open five times, Wimbledon twice and the Australian Open once.

He has won the last three Grand Slam events and will go for the "Rafa Slam" in January in Australia.

Djokovic returned to the world No. 2 position with his finals appearance. He got there by beating Roger Federer, keeping Federer out of the U.S. Open finals for the first time since 2003 and knocking him to No. 3 in the rankings.

Djokovic dispatches Monfils, gains semis

New York -- No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic breezed into the semifinals of the U.S. Open Wednesday with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gael Monfils.

Djokovic, the former world No. 2, easily dominated the second set after struggling in the first frame.

Monfils had a chance to pull to within 3-4 in the third set, but the Serbian star instead managed a key hold, went up 5-2 and then broke his French opponent to notch the victory and reach the semifinals for the fourth time in his U.S. Open career.

Djokovic broke Monfils' serve seven times while connecting for 21 more winners (38-17).

Djokovic will next face the winner of Wednesday's evening match between Roger Federer and Robin Soderling.

Federer, Djokovic gain U.S. Open quarters

Federer racked up 41 winners and took 77 percent of his first-serve points to withstand a second-set challenge and pull away for the victory, reaching the quarterfinals for the 10th straight year.

Federer won the U.S. Open from 2004-2008 and was the runner-up last year.

The Swiss superstar now goes on to face fifth-seeded Robin Soderling, who defeated Albert Montanes 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, to gain a spot in the quarters.
