Detroit -- U.S. singer Aretha Franklin, long revered as the Queen of Soul, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, WXYZ-TV, Detroit, reported Wednesday.
The National Enquirer said the 68-year-old singer has an incurable case of the disease, but that was not confirmed by WXYZ-TV, which attributed the cancer diagnosis to an unnamed close family friend.
Franklin's publicist said last week the Detroit native underwent a highly successful operation for an undisclosed illness.
The singer recently announced she was canceling performances and appearances through May so she could focus on unspecified health issues.

New York -- The New York doctor who tried to save the life of John Lennon 30 years ago says the singer had no pulse and wasn't breathing when he arrived at a hospital.
The former Beatle was shot and killed by Mark Chapman 30 years ago this week, and the emergency room doctor who worked to save his life recalls the incident as though it happened yesterday, the New York Daily News reported.
Dr. Stephan Lynn had just arrived home following a 13-hour shift at Roosevelt Hospital's emergency room when he received a call to return to the hospital about 11 p.m. on Dec. 8, 1980.

San Francisco -- California restaurant owners said a neighborhood group seeks to keep them from enhancing their eatery's ambiance with a live opera singer and recorded music.
The owners of Colosseo, an Italian restaurant in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood, want to have Luca, a trained opera singer, serenade diners backed up by amplified recorded orchestral accompaniment, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday.
But the neighborhood group, the Telegraph Hill Dwellers, says it fears the permit eatery owners Stefano Cassolato and Salvatore Nevigato seek for Luca's amplified recorded orchestral accompaniment could be used in the future for louder music -- for example, a Jimi Hendrix tribute concert.

New York -- Jessica Simpson and football player Eric Johnson are engaged, a representative said Sunday.
The singer was seen showing off her engagement ring at Dillard's department store in Kansas City, Mo., Saturday as she was promoting her clothing line, People magazine reported.
The couple began dating in May, after being introduced by friends.
Simpson, 30, recently told People magazine she and Johnson, 31, were planning to spend Thanksgiving together.

Los Angeles -- Demi Lovato's publicist says the U.S. singer-actress has left the Jonas Brothers concert tour and is seeking treatment for "emotional and physical issues."
Lovato, 18, is best known for her work in the "Camp Rock" TV movies and on the series "Sonny with a Chance."
She has been touring with the Jonas Brothers in recent months but her publicist told People.com she quit during the weekend and checked into a treatment center for "emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time."
The name of the facility and the nature of Lovato's "issues" were not disclosed.

London -- Arianna Forster, a German-born punk rocker known as Ari-Up, has died following an undisclosed illness, her stepfather John Lydon's Web site said.
Lydon, former singer of the Sex Pistols, is married to Forster's mother, German publishing heiress Nora Forster.
Arianna Forster, 48, was a member of the British all-girl punk band The Slits.
"John and Nora have asked us to let everyone know that Nora's daughter Arianna (aka Ari-Up) died today (Wednesday, Oct. 20) after a serious illness. She will be sadly missed. Everyone at JohnLydon.com and PiLofficial.Com would like to pass on their heartfelt condolences to John, Nora and family. Rest in Peace," the message on the Web site said.

Los Angeles -- U.S. singer and reality television personality Nick Lachey is set to return as host of the second season of
"The Sing-Off," NBC said Thursday.
The a cappella singing competition series is being scheduled as a five-night holiday event premiering Dec. 6. The battle of voices will then continue Dec. 8, 13 and 15, culminating in a live finale Dec. 20, during which one of 10 a capella groups will walk away with the $100,000 prize and a Sony Music recording contract.
