For this, NASA has picked one out of a number of machines ranging from $300 desktop models to $500,000 warehouse builders.

The venture is being dubbed as a great achievement for the agency as it would free astronauts from carrying every tool, spare part, or anything that may be required on space.

The printer would craft objects by protruding layer over layer of plastic made from the long strands enveloped around large spools. These spools would substitute for scores of extra instruments and hardware in the upcoming mission. However, the mission is only a demonstration of printing.

The machines were initially developed to be used on Earth or confront the space challenges such as problems of launch or pressure of functioning in the orbit. This encapsulates issues like microgravity, different air pressures, extreme temperatures and limited power. So, the basic purpose of 3D printers was to tone down such problems.

NASA had hired Silicon Valley startup Made In Space to construct something that would not be hackneyed. According to the director of engineering at Nasa''''s Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, about 35 miles south of San Francisco, "If you want to be adaptable, you have to be able to design and manufacture on the fly, and that''''s where 3D printing in space comes in.”

According to Aaron Kemmer, CEO of Made in Space, "Imagine an astronaut needing to make a life-or-death repair on the International Space Station. Rather than hoping that the necessary parts and tools are on the station already, what if the parts could be 3-D printed when they needed them?"

Fleshing out the details, the engineers at NASA have been 3D printing miniature satellites that would be shuttled out of the International Space Station.

3-D printer’s inventor Andrew Filo, who is consulting with NASA on the project, has said, "Any time we realize we can 3D print something in space, it''''s like Christmas. You can get rid of concepts like rationing, scarce or irreplaceable.”

Though the mission is initially a demonstration of printing, finally it would have to capture gasses moving out from the extruded plastics, print their own parts for self-repairs and recycle printed products.

Originally Published on 2013-09-30.
3-D Printers Andrew Filo Gadgets International Space Station NASA News NASA Project Space News Technology Technology Top Story United States Sun, 23 Feb 2014 06:56:42 +0000 Neha Dutt 1701713612 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Lift Heavy Objects With Smart Phone Controlled Smart Lifting Device http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20140222/lift-heavy-objects-smart-phone-controlled-smart-lifting-device-id-1701713758.html

The latest lifting device that is controlled by smartphone has the ability to lift heavy items, which can weight about 23 kgs just at the press of a button. This makes it easy for the person to handle it easily and install it effectively. A Provo, Utah researchers'' team developed this innovative myLifter device. This device can be highly useful to lift and store an array of heavy objects such as bicycles, cargo boxes etc., says the description about this device placed at the website of Kickstarter.

Another added benefit of using this myLifter device is that you can use it to raise bigger things such as the hardtop of a jeep or a storage platform. This is because the device can be synchronized using the smartphone app and can keep it under control with the touch of a button. If one cannot afford to use the smartphones or tablets to control this device, they can enjoy the same control with the help of a remote control.

This remote option is also a great choice, as it will allow one to pair it with many dozens of myLifter devices, provide them each with a name and then enjoy full control of these devices.

Each myLifter device includes a new built in feature called “smartLIFT”. It allows the user to programme it by presetting the high and low point for each item that one needs the device to lift or lower it. As soon as the high points and low points are set, one needs to just press the smart lift option and the smart lower button present in the device and it would automatically place the item at the desired places at the desired heights. Schechter also added that the 3D printer at college was seldom used as it was so expensive and many classes were not offered in the curriculum.

He then sought the advice of his sculpture professor on developing a new 3D printer that can be built with plastic and also had good help from his three friends. Along with his business partners, Schechter launched a campaign to kick-start the awareness about low cost printer and its innovative design to the masses. The Deltaprintr by Schechter costs just US $475 for un-assembled ones and US $685 for assembled type, which is a larger one. This is way too low when compared to the price of brand new Makerbot 3D printer that costs US $2000.

Reports of Mashable state that the extra large (2.5 feet) version of Deltaprintr is equipped with a dual printing ability, has a diameter of 2 inches and height of 6 inches more and is available at the rate of US $705.
Schechter’s Deltaprintr makes use of three stepper motors that are placed under the platform made of acrylic where the printing is performed. These motors can control the carriages by moving the hot end and this allows it to create the 3D printing of various objects.

As the design of this innovative printer by Schechter consists of very less parts, its customers can save a lot of money as there would be no need to spend on spare replacement. The developer of Deltaprintr also added that while MakerBot makes use of belts in order to move the print head, his 3D printer uses fishing line. This allows the user to expand it to make it a bit taller by changing the rods made of aluminum. This makes it more accurate and faster than MakerBot.

This story was originally published on 27/12/2013.
3D printer affordable Deltaprintr Gadgets Gadgets Shai Schechter Top Story United States US College Student Wed, 22 Jan 2014 05:36:44 +0000 dhivya 1701713769 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Go grab an anti-bacterial phone case to keep your iPhone germ-free http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20140121/go-grab-anti-bacterial-phone-case-keep-your-iphone-germ-free-id-1701713746.html

Are you a person who has an abnormal fear of dirt or germs? The Wall Street Journal reports state that BB had to cancel two of their upcoming devices in order to mitigate the inventory risk that was identified by the brand.

The two BB10 devices that have been dropped are better known as The Café and The Kopi series. Earlier this year, the design of Kopi was leaked that showed this entry level mobile with a physical keyboard and design similar to Q5. The devices were especially designed by Blackberry to be offered at a low cost with two different forms- QWERTY and Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 variant with the full touch feature.

However the reports reveal that the low-cost BB10 devices were developed for the emerging markets, more information obtained through sources reveal that one variation was destined for AT & T, Sprint and Verizon.

So, its official that these two BB10 devices are out of the pipeline. It is also clear that BlackBerry and Foxconn are working together in developing a device that it plans to offer at low cost. The duo is planning to release it during March or April. The WSJ report also states that BlackBerry is working on another two high end device, the codenames of which are leaked as Ontario and Windmere. The sources also state that Windmere would be equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard while Ontario would have a full touch feature.

If the rumors are reliable, you can expect these two high end gadgets from the house of BlackBerry running on Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. However, little is known about the current status of development for these two devices. Apart from those devices that are already making rounds in the market, there were about 10 BlackBerry 10 devices that belonged to B series which were under planning, exploration and development. However, as of now, there is no information about how many are no longer in the pipeline of BB.
BlackBerry Gadgets Qualcomm Snapdragon qwerty Sprint Technology The Café and The Kopi series Top Story two BB10 devices cancelled United States Verizon Wed, 25 Dec 2013 05:44:39 +0000 dhivya 1701713767 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Apple, Google and 6 other tech giants want reform in surveillance policies http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20131209/apple-google-and-6-other-tech-giants-want-reform-surveillance-policies-id-17017137

Eight tech giants have joined hands Monday to reform the US Government’s surveillance practices. In some instances, users are greeted by a disturbing sound of clicking and grinding while in others the Xbox One's drive refuses to read the discs at all.

Perturbed users contacted Reddit, Kotaku, a gaming news website and Microsoft's Support Forum to complain that their new consoles were faulty. Still others have uploaded videos to exhibit the problem.

One complaint reads, "[I] received my console on launch and after going through the setup everything seemed great. Played a few rounds of Killer Instinct but then really wanted to get down to it and popped in Dead Rising 3 but was greeted with what you hear in the video."

Microsoft admits to problem

Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and now issued a statement saying they are working with customers to resolve it as quickly as possible.

"The issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers", said Microsoft in a statement. “We’re working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange programme. Rest assured, we are taking care of our customers.”

Microsoft has had its fair share of problems with the launch of its Xbox console. When the Xbox 360 was launched in 2005, a frequent compliant faced was 'the red ring of death', in which three of the console's front lights would light up and it would rendered the devise useless.

Spencer Izard, an analyst with IDC said, "Microsoft suffered very significant quality control problems with the early Xbox 360 consoles and has put significant effort into its hardware design and manufacturing process to minimise faults. For launches over multiple countries the volume of manufacturing required by both Microsoft and Sony will always unfortunately yield a minor amount of hardware failures, in one form or another, and we are seeing this with this launch cycle.”

The Xbox One launched on Friday in the UK and 12 other countries is the first new console from Microsoft in eight years. It reportedly sold more than one million units in the first 24 hours shattering all previous Xbox first-day sales records. As per the company the console was sold out at most retailers and they were now working to replenish stock.

Microsoft acknowledges faulty disc drive issues in the newly launched Xbox One.

faulty disc drive issue Gadgets Gaming launched Friday Microsoft sold 1 million units in the first 24 hours Top Story United States Xbox One's Tue, 26 Nov 2013 06:28:55 +0000 Neka Sehgal 1701713728 at http://www.themoneytimes.com Americans Not Keen On Spending Unless There Are Discounts http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20131125/americans-not-keen-spending-unless-there-are-discounts-id-1701713726.html

In spite of being the holiday season, shoppers in US are eager to spend their cash only if they get good discounts. Even though there are positive signs that show the economy is improving, massive chain stores do not expect their customers in America to enter their malls as a part of their holiday shopping until they see a gleaming sign in red reading out discounts. So, the American shoppers tend to shop in advance when there is a discount sale and avoid going for shopping during holiday season.

Retailers are keen enough to lure shoppers who love to bargain a bit while on a shopping expedition when compared to the previous year. Marissa Anwar, Operations Consultant, resides in Toronto, New York, who loves to be involved in bargain hunting said that the economy is not great as she has lost few good clients but she has reduced her shopping budget to $2800 this year, which is too low when compared to $4,000. She also confessed that she was a shopaholic previously but now she wants top make sure that she has enough money before she spends it.

This issue is well recognized by all retailers across the US as they recession hit US by 2007 and since then they have offered their products at slashed prices just to make their customers buy something. However, all retailers agree that these discounts munch off their profits.

Walmart, Kohl and target are some of the retailers who own more than two dozens of major chains, who have decreased their outlook for profits for both the quarters this year. The major reason behind it is that their shoppers enjoy huge discounts and hence show interest in doing some shopping. This has also triggered a discount mania by retailers this festive season.

On Friday, Wal-Mart began to slash its process in order to compete with its competitors like Best Buy to sell accessories, toys etc for Black Friday, that comes after Thanks Giving. However, hopes are still on that retail sales are high by 0.4% during October after it fell flat the month before.
Americans discounts Markets People retailers shoppers Top Story United States US Mon, 25 Nov 2013 09:10:17 +0000 dhivya 1701713726 at http://www.themoneytimes.com
