Is Terra Nitrogen Earning Its Keep?

Margins matter. The more Terra Nitrogen (NYSE: TNH) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why I check on my holdings' margins at least once a quarter. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, comparisons with sector peers and competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Terra Nitrogen's competitive position could be.

NHL: Vancouver 2, Edmonton 1

Edmonton, Alberta -- The Sedin brothers accounted for four points Sunday in the Vancouver Canucks' 2-1 decision over Edmonton.

Henrik Sedin scored one goal and assisted on Alexandre Burrows' goal. His brother Daniel assisted on both scores.

Burrows' first-period tally broke a scoreless tie, and Henrik Sedin scored off the rebound of his brother's shot on Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk for a 2-0 lead midway through the second.

Roberto Luongo was barely tested by Edmonton, turning aside 11-of-12 shots and carrying a shutout until there were 5 seconds left in the contest, when Jordan Eberly scored on a power play.

NHL: Tampa Bay 5, Vancouver 4 (OT)

Vancouver, British Columbia -- Steven Stamkos got his second goal of the game 34 seconds into overtime Saturday, handing the Tampa Bay Lighting a 5-4 decision over Vancouver.

With Ryan Kesler off on a high-sticking call, Tampa Bay held a 4-on-3 advantage and Stamkos got the game-winner on a slap shot off assists from Martin St. Louis and Ryan Malone.

The decisive tally was the 24th goal of the year for Stamkos, second-most in the NHL behind Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. He also scored in the second period and added an assist for the Lightning, who won in Vancouver for the first time in franchise history.

Teddy Purcell had a goal and an assist and Nate Thompson and Brett Clark also scored in Tampa Bay's win. Dan Ellis turned aside 23-of-27 shots.

NHL: Toronto 3, Montreal 1

Toronto -- Phil Kessel and Tomas Kaberle notched first-period goals Saturday and the Toronto Maple Leafs went on to down Montreal 3-1.

Kessel put his own rebound past Alex Auld 7:38 into the game to give the Leafs a lead they wouldn't relinquish and Kaberle's shot from the left circle off a pass from Fredrik Sjostrom 3 minutes later made it 2-0.

Kris Versteeg added an empty-netter and Jean-Sebastien Giguere turned aside 22 shots for Toronto, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

Michael Cammalleri scored for the Canadiens and Auld allowed two goals on 22 shots in the loss.

NHL: Edmonton 4, Tampa Bay 3

Edmonton, Alberta -- Jordan Eberle and Linus Omark scored in the shootout Friday to give the Edmonton Oilers a 4-3 victory over Tampa Bay.

It was the fifth home win in 13 tries for the Oilers this season, equaling Nashville and Phoenix for the fewest number of home victories in the Western Conference.

Taylor Hall and Tom Gilbert both scored power-play goals in the second period to give Edmonton a 3-2 lead but Steven Stamkos tied it with the lone goal of the third period. It was the 22nd goal of the season for Stamkos, who is second in the NHL in that category behind Pittsburgh's
Sidney Crosby and his 26.

After Stamkos missed in the shootout's second round, Omark scored to end the game.

NHL: Ottawa 3, New Jersey 2

Ottawa -- Jarkko Ruutu scored his second goal of the season midway through the second period Friday and it became the game-winner in Ottawa's 3-2 victory over New Jersey.

Ruutu had 12 goals and 26 points last season, but this was only his sixth point of the 2010-11 campaign. It gave the Senators a two-goal lead and Ottawa held on after Dainius Zubrus brought New Jersey within a goal late in the middle period.

The result spoiled the return of New Jersey's Martin Brodeur, who has more victories and shutouts than any other goaltender in NHL history.

Brodeur had missed the last eight games with a bruised right elbow. He gave up all three goals on 29 shots. Pascal Leclaire got the victory with 29 saves, helping Ottawa win for the second time in seven games.
