Hazelnut recall issued amid food poisoning scare

Los Angeles-based distributor, DeFranco and Sons is voluntarily recalling bulk and packaged in-shell hazelnuts, as well as mixed nut assortment containing hazelnuts called filberts, amid fears that they may be contaminated with a potentially fatal strain of E. coli.

Police: Woman bit off hubby's tongue

Sheboygan, Wis. -- Police in Wisconsin said they arrested a woman who bit her 79-year-old husband's tongue off during a kiss.

Investigators said the Sheboygan man called 911 at about 11 p.m. Monday and an ambulance and police were dispatched to the home when operators had difficulty understanding the man, the Sheboygan (Wis.) Press reported Tuesday.

Officers said they arrived to find the man and his wife, 57, singing Christmas carols outside of their home. Sgt. Doug Teunissen said the man revealed half of his tongue had been bitten off by his wife while they were kissing inside shortly earlier.

COL FB: Wisconsin 48, Michigan 28

Ann Arbor, Mich. -- James White and Montee Ball combined for 354 rushing yards and six touchdowns Saturday in fifth-ranked Wisconsin's 48-28 victory at Michigan.

White scored twice and gained 181 yards, and Ball racked up 173 yards and four touchdowns in a game in which the Badgers (10-1, 6-1 Big Ten) finished with 558 yards of total offence to 442 for Michigan (7-4, 3-4).

Scott Tolzien was 14-of-15 passing for 201 yards, although the Badgers only ran one pass play in the entire second half.

The win was the sixth in a row for Wisconsin, who can wrap up at least a share of the Big Ten title with a win over Northwestern next weekend.

Unions forced into two-tier wage systems

Milwaukee -- U.S. companies threatening to close plants have set workers back with two-tiered wage systems, a union official in Wisconsin said.

"This is absolutely a surrender for labor," Mike Masik Sr., a union leader for Harley-Davidson told the New York Times.

At General Motors Co., Chrysler LLC, auto parts maker Delphi and Caterpillar Inc. unions have agreed to two-tiered wage systems that could be permanent. Unlike the recession of the 1980s, recent concessions on wages at those companies have no end point, the Times reported Saturday.

COL FB: Wisconsin 31, Ohio State 18

Madison, Wis. -- David Gilreath opened the game with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and No. 16 Wisconsin went on to upset top-ranked Ohio State 31-18 Saturday.

John Clay rushed for 104 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns and the Badgers turned back a fourth-quarter challenge to hang on and send the nation's No. 1 team down to a defeat.

Wisconsin (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten) blunted the Buckeyes' comeback attempt when James White scored on a 12-yard run. It was the first time Wisconsin has defeated a top-ranked team since 1981 when they beat Michigan.

Scott Tolzien went 13-of-16 passing for 152 yards and was intercepted once for Wisconsin.

Alleged robber: 'Is this a bad idea?'

La Crosse, Wis. -- Police in Wisconsin said a robbery suspect interrupted an attack on an intended victim to ask whether his crime was a "bad idea."

La Crosse police said a Viterbo University student walking to the campus fine arts center late Wednesday noticed a man following him for about a block before the man started attempting to punch him and jump on his back, the La Crosse Tribune reported Wednesday.

However, the student told police the man abruptly stopped his attack to ask: "Is this a bad idea?"

The attacker gave his name as "Mason" and the student advised him to go home and sleep, police said.

PGA Championship wide open

Havana, Wis. -- The year's final major golf championship, the PGA championship, begins in Wisconsin Thursday with the sport seemingly in the midst of a revolution.

The top two ranked players in the world are coming off very poor performances, the American Ryder Cup team is shaping up to include perhaps as many as a half dozen newcomers and the two most recent major events have been won by relative unknowns.

With that as a backdrop, a 156-man PGA Championship field will tackle the sand-filled hills of the Whistling Straits course.

Rains softened the 7,514-yard course on the eve of the tournament Wednesday and more showers were forecast for the weekend.
